General Objectives

  • Communicate effectively in Igbo
  • Analyze issues in the language
  • Interpret and explain figurative and idiomatic expressions in Igbo
  • Apply Igbo literature to their daily life experiences and to demonstrate Igbo cultural values

1. HARSHE (LANGUAGE)

Comprehension

Content:

  • •One passage of about one hundred and fifty (150) words.

Learning Objectives:

  • use appropriate words or phrases for specific thought
  • deduce the lesson in the passage
  • determine the main theme of the passage
  • give an appropriate title of a passage
  • interpret the meanings of particular words

Sounds and Sound Patterns (Ụdaasụsụ na Usoro Ụdaasụsụ)

Content:

  • •Vowels and Consonants (Ụdaume na mgbochiume)
  • •Sound Patterns/Processes
  • •i. Syllabic nasals (myiri ụdaume)
  • •ii. Syllable structure (nkeji mkpụrụokwu)
  • •iii. Vowel harmony (ndakọrịta ụdaume)
  • •iv. Vowel assimilation (olilo ụdaume)
  • •v. Vowel elision and consonant elision (ndapụ ụdaume na ndapụ mgbochiume)
  • •c) Tone and tone marking (Akara ụdaolu)

Learning Objectives:

  • identify vowels, consonants and syllabic nasals
  • distinguish between the speech sounds of the Igbo language
  • recognize syllabic nasals 'm' & 'n'
  • determine the syllabic structure of any word
  • identify the vowel groups in Igbo
  • describe vowel assimilation and vowel and consonant elision
  • assign tone marks appropriately

Spelling and spelling rules (Nsupe na Iwu Nsupe)

Learning Objectives:

  • detect words written correctly in Igbo
  • observe consonant restrictions in Igbo
  • determine appropriate word division in Igbo
  • apply correct spellings in writing

Igbo Orthography (Mkpụrụedemede Igbo)

Dialect and Standard Igbo (Olundị/Olumba na Igbo Izugbe)

Learning Objectives:

  • differentiate between standard Igbo and dialects
  • use standard Igbo in their writings

Vocabulary (Mkpụrụokwu dị n'asụsụ)

Content:

  • •Expansion through word derivation processes, coinages, loans and loans blends (Ịmụbawanye mkpụrụokwu site n'usoro mmepụta, mkpụpụta, mbite na mbiọgwa).

Learning Objectives:

  • differentiate between loan and coined words
  • identify loan words and loan-blends in Igbo
  • use words appropriately

Grammar (Ụtọasụsụ)

Content:

  • •Parts of speech (Nkejiasụsụ): Nominals (Mkpọaha), verbs (ngwaa), adjectives (nkọwa), adverbs (nkwuwa), affixes (mgbakwunye), enclitics (nsokwunya),dgz.

Learning Objectives:

  • differentiate between grammatical categories
  • identify parts of speech and their functions
  • differentiate between types of affixes and their functions
  • determine types of morphemes and their functions
  • identify words, phrases, clauses, sentences and their functions

Composition

Content:

  • •i. differentiate between different essay types
  • •ii. describe the characteristics of essay types
  • •iii. compare different types of essay
  • •iv. criticize other people's essays

Translation

Content:

  • •i. translate English into Igbo and vice versa
  • •ii. communicate effectively in Igbo and English

2. LITERATURE (AGỤMAGỤ)

Literary devices

Content:

  • •Atụmatụokwu na atụmatụ agụmagụ) dịka alliteration (bịambia mgbochiume), assonance (bịambịa ụdaume), parallelism (kwunkwugha), metaphor (mbụrụ), simile (myiri), hyperbole (egbeokwu), personification (mmemmadụ) and proverbs (ilu), dgz.

Learning Objectives:

  • identify all literary devices in the passages
  • interpret literary devices
  • differentiate between types of literary devices
  • use Igbo literary devices appropriately

Oral Literature

Content:
